Uwe Schmidt Special

As dance music matures and proliferates, so does the aesthestic of some of its more refined musicians. From a early point the vanguard of what now constitutes the cream of European dance music were centred around Frankfurt and Berlin. Out of that emerged Uwe Schmidt, who from the outset became an extremely prolific producer, not only producing some of the tightest acid committed to vinyl, but collaborating with a number of ambient artists including Pete Namlook and Tetsu Inoue. His unconventional take of pop music, and his desire to incorporate it into electronic music, something he would revisit regularly in later guises took form in the shape of Lassigue Bendthaus. In 1997 Schmidt declared himself "bored with European dance music" and moved to Chile. There, he matured a vision that would incorporate traditional latin forms into his ideas. The Senor Coconut project, recreating Kraftwerk and later other pop records, gained much attention worldwide and thrust the unassuming Schmidt into the limelight. As ever, he prefers to remain hidden behind a vast number of guises and pseudonyms. Much of his work is available on the Rather Interesting Label, with many of the releases limited to 1000 copies or less. Schmidt still likes to visit acid, as seen in his recent releases under the Atom Heart and Pink Elln monikers, but it is just part of a wide and fabulous world of music incorporating sampling, italodisco, ambient, drum n bass, latin and pop that he has constructed over the last decade and a half. This show is dedicated to one of dance music visionaries who has consistently moved through the electronic realm with a liberal use of dry humour that some have yet to fully recognise and appreciate.
